Enabling

Before you can use the external radio support you must first enable this feature.

  • In the ribbon bar, select the View panel.
  • In the More Options pane press ••• to display the selection window.
  • Make sure that External Radio is checked [X], then press OK.
  • Restart the program (not your computer) to have External Radio available in the ribbon bar, by default it will be selected.

The external radio window is shown in the Receive DSP options window.

Antenna or IF Output?

You must decide how the SDR receives signals, either using its own antenna or connected to the IF Output of the external radio.

Antenna

This is the recommended option.

There are several ways to connect your SDR to an antenna:

  • Sharing the main antenna with the external radio via a switching box such as the excellent RTR-1A from DX Engineering.
  • Connected to a RX Out connector on your radio. Not all radios have a RX Out, the FTDX-3000 does.
  • Connected to a specialised receiving antenna such as the Wellbrook Loop.

IF Output

When you use the IF Output from your radio the same frequency is used by the SDR irrespective of the frequency which the external radio is tuned. An example of a radio supporting IF Output is the FTDX-3000 with an output frequency of 9MHz.

The software must make the necessary changes in frequency so that the external radio's frequency is displayed, not the IF output frequency.

Disadvantages
  • The IF Output signal may not have a flat response,
  • The IF Output bandwidth may be restricted,
  • As you tune with the console the display may show erratic behaviour.
 
Omni-Rig

This software uses OmniRig from http://www.dxatlas.com/omnirig/ for radio control. OmniRig must be installed before using the external radio display, more information is here.
